Job Description:
As a Workers' Compensation Defense Paralegal, you will be integral to our defense team, assisting attorneys with managing and defending workers' compensation claims in California. This role will involve a mix of legal research, case management, legal correspondence, and client interaction, all aimed at building robust defense strategies for our clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist attorneys with all aspects of workers' compensation defense, including preparing legal documents, motions, and pleadings.
Draft and file answers, discovery responses, and other necessary legal filings with the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB).
Manage case files from inception to resolution, ensuring deadlines and case details are tracked and updated.
Conduct legal research on workers' compensation laws, regulations, and case law to support case strategy.
Communicate with clients, insurance adjusters, and opposing counsel regarding case updates and document requests.
Review and summarize medical records, expert reports, and other evidence relevant to the case.
Prepare responses to discovery requests, including interrogatories, requests for production, and depositions.
Assist with developing case strategies and identifying potential defenses, including reviewing employee injuries, policies, and medical evidence.
Coordinate and attend depositions, hearings, and trials, providing paralegal support as needed.
Handle lien disputes, negotiate settlements, and monitor settlement agreements to ensure compliance.
Track and maintain case calendars for hearings, deadlines, and critical events.
Assist with claims-related audits, reporting, and compliance tasks for clients.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in workers' compensation defense, including experience with WCAB filings and procedures.
Strong knowledge of California workers' compensation law and regulations, particularly in a defense context.
Proficient with legal software (such as Merus Case and others) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience with case management, discovery, and trial preparation in the workers' compensation defense field.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a caseload efficiently. Ability to work independently while collaborating as part of a team.
Bilingual (any language & English) is a plus.
Paralegal certification from an accredited program preferred.
